Kikugawa Eizan | ||
An Ukiyo-e painter and printmaker born 1787, Eizan lived in Edo (now Tokyo). The son of Kikugawa Eiji, a maker of fans and Kano-style painter. Eizan was taught first by his father and then by Suzuki Nanrei and Iwakubo Hokkei. He was also influenced by Utamaro and Hokusai. From the early 1800s until he retired about 1830, he became the leading designer of bijin-ga (based on Utamaro's late style); actor prints and erotica (Shunga). Groups of women and children were also among his favorite subjects. He died in 1867. His works are represented in numerous collections, including the British Museum, Ashmolean, Fine Arts (San Francisco), Honolulu, Stanford, Minneapolis, and Cincinnati.
