Silkscreen, or serigraphs as called in the USA, are are a modern development of stencil printing. They are made up of 20-40 screens which are built up in the same order as the artist would create the picture, with each shade being approved individually. Using this many screens gives the prints a distinctive textured quality.
The printing process involves paint being brushed with a squeegee thorough a fine silk screen or other fine fabric, held taut in a wooden frame and masked in place by an impervious lacquer. The excess is then wiped away and the process is repeated with the next screen until the final image has been created.
