Cecil Gordon Lawson was born in Shropshire in 1851 his father was portrait painter William Lawson. Cecil was taught by his father and became one of the best landscape artists. He moved to London in 1861, but travelled to Holland, Belgium and France. The high point in his career came in 1878 with his work the “Ministers garden”. In 1879 he married the flower painter Constance Philip, and settled in Kent. His health deteriorated and in 1881 he moved to the French Riviera where he died in 1882.
