Sir
Luke Fildes was born in Liverpool in 1843 and died in 1927.
He studied at the Chester School of Art and the RCA. He originally
worked as a magazine illustrator, but a trip to Venice in 1874 inspired
him in other directions.
Later on in his life he changed to portraiture and at one stage was
one of the highest paid portrait painters in England, which maintained his
