Born in Paris in 1836 Edward J Poynter was one of
the greatest Victorian classicist painters (known as the Olympians).
After studying under Dobson and at the Royal Academy he became part
of the British Establishment. He also became the 1st Slade professor of the
University College London in 1871 and the President of the Royal Academy
in 1896. His works were epic
scenes of battle, Greek and Roman gods and hero’s.
His brother in law was Burne-Jones, who was inspired by Poynter’s
