Artist: Lawrence Stephen Lowry
Profile: Born in England 1887, died 1976. Lowry was employed for some years as a rent collector, and he claimed that contact with the working class life was to inform his art. At the Manchester Municipal College of Art, Lowry drew from life in a traditional manner, producing refined, naturalistic works. In 1915, intense dislike of the Salford area developed into an obsession with the scenery, mills and collieries that made the urban environment and the people who lived and worked within it, a painting style was consolidated that remained virtually unchanged for nearly fifty years.
