is recognized as a major realist painter of the twentieth century. He
studied at the New York School of Art. The influence of the French
Impressionists infiltrates his composition and his focus on light effects
and social scenes. He utilized the "typically American subject matter"
such as hotel rooms, gasoline stations and café bars at night. He died in
