Paul Cezanne was born in France in 1839. His early
paintings, influenced by Daumier and Delacroix, were dark and dramatic the
paint roughly applied with a palette knife. In 1870 he retired to the
south of France where his landscapes showed a new subtlety. He died in
France in 1906.
